At the heart of the culinary experience that is the Grillmarket is Iceland´s pristine nature. A close working collaboration with dedicated local farmers guarantees the very best in local produce. The Grillmarket opened for business in 2011 and became an overnight sensation. It is still one of the most popular restaurants in Iceland.
Lækjargata 2A was built in 1920 and originally housed a cinema called Nýja Bíó, or The New Cinema. At the time it was the largest assembly hall in the country and could set up to five hundred people. It was designed by architect Finnur Thorlacius and got its name to distinguish it from an already existing cinema in Reykjavík, Gamla bíó, or The Old Cinema.
Films were shown in the building up until 1987 when the premises was converted int a bar which burned down in 1998. The decision was taken to demolish the building after the fire. In 2011 a new building was erected where Nýja bíó stood before. This new building resembles the old building, both in style and form, except for an additional floor. Architecturally the building is in the Jugend or Art Nouveau style.
